What You Need Before You Start

Requirement Details
VidTraffic account Sign in to VidTraffic and connect the YouTube channel you are authorized to access.
Claude account Custom remote MCP connectors are available on supported Claude plans. Free users currently have an allowance of one custom connector.
MCP address https://mcp.vidtraffic.com — copied from your VidTraffic Agents page.
Permissions Grant read access for the data you want Claude to analyse. Other VidTraffic actions have separate permission switches.

For current plan availability and account-specific restrictions, check Claude’s official custom connector guide. Organization-managed Claude accounts may require administrator approval.

Step-by-Step: Connect VidTraffic to Claude Using MCP

Step 1 — Open the Agents Section in VidTraffic

Sign in to VidTraffic. From the left sidebar, select Agents. This is where VidTraffic displays the hosted MCP connection details and any agents you have authorized. The page is separate from your regular Chat section.

Step 2 — Copy the MCP Server Address

On the Agents page, locate the address field under “Your own agent, with your real numbers.” Click Copy address. The URL is https://mcp.vidtraffic.com—this is the remote MCP server Claude needs. You do not have to generate an API token or install a local MCP service.

Step 3 — Find Connectors in Claude Settings

Open Claude and go to its Settings area. In the Customize section, click Connectors. The precise placement of Settings may vary between Claude apps, but the connector settings page is the part you need.

Step 4 — Choose “Add Custom Connector”

On the Connectors → Yours page, click + Add and choose Add custom connector. Your list might already contain services such as Gmail or Google Drive. If VidTraffic is already connected—as in the screenshot—you do not need to add it a second time.

Claude's Connectors 'Yours' tab with the +Add menu open on 'Add custom connector'.

FIGURE 4 | From Yours, open + Add and select Add custom connector.

Step 5 — Enter the VidTraffic MCP URL

In the Add custom connector dialog, enter the name VidTraffic and paste https://mcp.vidtraffic.com in the URL field. Click Continue. The server uses the remote HTTPS connection; do not append an unverified path or paste a Google API key.

Step 6 — Confirm the Connection You Initiated

Claude may show a confirmation screen asking whether to finish connecting a connector. If you initiated the connection from Claude, inspect the destination and choose Continue connecting. Do not approve unexpected authorization requests or links sent by someone else.

Step 7 — Review the VidTraffic Permissions

The VidTraffic authorization page now lists the access being requested. You can uncheck permission categories you do not need. For a first analytics-only session, channel:read and analytics:read are the natural starting points; add other scopes only for the tasks you intend to use.

The example shows additional scopes for public lookups, competitor lists, content plans and creation tools. Not all scopes are read-only actions inside VidTraffic; two can update VidTraffic data. None of these scopes permits Claude to publish, edit or delete videos on YouTube.

FIGURE 7 | Review the eight permission choices before granting access.

Step 8 — Click Allow to Finish Authorization

Read the security notice beneath the permissions. It explains that YouTube access is read-only and that the connecting AI client may process the data it receives under its own provider rules. If the permissions are correct, select Allow. Choosing Don’t allow cancels this authorization attempt.

Step 9 — Set Tool Permissions in Claude

Back in Claude, open the connected VidTraffic connector to review Tool permissions. Claude can ask for your approval before invoking tools. Use Needs approval for sensitive actions; other available controls may include always allowing a tool or blocking it.

This setting is separate from the permission scopes you granted on the VidTraffic screen. Claude’s tool-level rules can narrow the actions it performs, but they do not grant broader access than your VidTraffic permissions.

FIGURE 9 | Review individual tools; Needs approval is a cautious default.

Step 10 — Confirm Claude Is Connected in VidTraffic

Return to VidTraffic → Agents. A successful connection appears under Connected, with Claude marked by a green status indicator and a Disconnect option. Your Claude connector settings should also show VidTraffic as a connected service.

You can disconnect the agent from the VidTraffic Agents page if you no longer want it to access your data. Access is revoked on its next request, according to VidTraffic’s current connection flow.

What Do the Eight VidTraffic MCP Permissions Mean?

The authorization screen gives you granular controls. Choose based on the job you want Claude to perform—not on the assumption that every box should stay checked.

Permission Access granted
channel:read Read your channel profile and video information.
analytics:read Read channel analytics such as views, watch time, traffic sources and retention.
competitors:read View tracked competitors and the content gaps VidTraffic has identified.
competitors:write Add or remove channels from your competitor-tracking list inside VidTraffic.
studio:generate Generate titles, descriptions, thumbnails or scores using your available daily allowance.
lookup:read Look up public information about channels and videos you specify.
plan:read Read accepted ideas, supporting research and scripts in your VidTraffic plan.
plan:write Add research and ideas or make changes to scripts inside VidTraffic.

Important: Read-only YouTube access does not mean every VidTraffic tool is read-only. The two :write scopes above can modify your VidTraffic competitor list and content plan, but the connector does not post, edit or delete content on YouTube. If you only want analytics, leave the write scopes disabled.

Test the Connection With a Real YouTube Analytics Question

In a Claude conversation, make sure the VidTraffic connector is enabled. Start with a small request that can be verified against your channel rather than a broad question about growth.

Using my connected VidTraffic tools, show my five most recent videos with their publish dates, views and watch time. If a metric is unavailable, tell me which one and why.

Once you get a response based on retrieved information, try more analytical tasks:

Compare the audience retention curves of my last five long-form videos. Identify the timestamps with the largest early drop-offs, and separate observations from possible explanations.

Which search terms brought viewers to my channel during the latest available reporting period? Suggest three video ideas based on those queries and cite the metrics you used.

Which videos performed above my channel’s typical baseline? Compare similar formats rather than treating Shorts and long-form videos as equivalent.

The connector can return data only if it is available for your account, reporting period and permissions. Claude can suggest hypotheses from patterns, but those hypotheses still need human review. Read our YouTube Analytics guide for the meaning of CTR, reach, retention and traffic sources.

What Can Claude See Through VidTraffic MCP?

With the appropriate scopes, Claude can work with your own channel metrics, uploads, comments, search terms, traffic sources and retention. You may also grant separate access to public channel research, tracked competitors, drafts or your content plan. The precise tools available depend on your selected permissions and plan allowance.

A crucial distinction: video-content analysis (summarising a transcript) and channel-performance analysis (reviewing CTR, retention or search sources) are not the same. VidTraffic’s published MCP tool list does not advertise transcript retrieval as a dedicated tool. If you need spoken-content summaries, see How to Analyse YouTube Videos With Claude. For analytics, the authorized connection provides data a transcript cannot.

For a practical look at one of these reports, see How to Analyze YouTube Audience Retention With AI.

Why Choose a Hosted YouTube MCP Server?

A hosted server gives Claude a stable HTTPS endpoint and manages the connection without a local installation. Self-hosted servers are also possible, but usually require you to handle server maintenance and some form of API/OAuth configuration. Self-hosting is not a prerequisite for private analytics—hosted services can provide authorized analytics through OAuth, as VidTraffic does.

Consideration VidTraffic hosted MCP Self-hosted MCP
Setup Copy the server URL and authorize Deploy and maintain a server
YouTube API key Not required for VidTraffic setup Depends on implementation
Private analytics Supported with account authorization Possible with proper OAuth scopes
Maintenance Handled by service Handled by operator

Troubleshooting: Claude Cannot Access Your YouTube Data

The Add Custom Connector option is missing

Make sure you are looking under Customize → Connectors. On an organization-managed account, an admin may need to add or approve the connector. Claude’s official setup guide also describes plan-specific availability and limits.

Claude cannot connect to the server

Confirm that you used exactly https://mcp.vidtraffic.com, then retry the connector setup. If a security interstitial appears, continue only if you initiated the connection yourself. Complete the authorization in the VidTraffic window.

The connector exists, but Claude gives only generic advice

Enable VidTraffic for the conversation and ask Claude to use its connected tools. Check whether the relevant analytics scope was selected and whether Claude is waiting for tool approval. A connected label does not prove an individual permission is granted.

CTR or impressions are missing

VidTraffic reports that initial reach data may take roughly two days to arrive after a channel is connected. Availability also depends on YouTube reporting and the selected date range. Test another metric—such as views or recent uploads—before assuming the entire connection failed.

A permission needs to be changed

Review the connector permissions in Claude and the authorization granted in VidTraffic. When necessary, disconnect and authorize again with the scopes you want. Restrict write actions unless they are part of your intended workflow.

Is It Safe to Connect YouTube to Claude?

VidTraffic’s MCP integration cannot publish, edit or delete YouTube content. Its permission screen also separates read access from actions that can update your VidTraffic competitor-tracking list or content plan. Choose the minimum necessary access, review Claude’s per-tool approval settings, and disconnect the integration when you no longer need it.

As with any external connector, data retrieved by Claude can be processed by the AI provider under its applicable policies and settings. Read the VidTraffic Privacy Policy and Claude’s security guidance for connectors before authorizing private data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect YouTube to Claude for free?

Claude’s current documentation says Free accounts can add one custom connector. VidTraffic offers a free plan, although usage allowances may apply. Check both services’ current plans before relying on particular limits.

What URL should I paste into Claude?

Use https://mcp.vidtraffic.com, copied from VidTraffic → Agents.

Do I need a Google Cloud project or YouTube API key?

No. With VidTraffic’s hosted MCP connection, those steps are not required. You authorize access through the VidTraffic connection flow.

Can Claude access my private YouTube Analytics?

Yes, when your channel is connected and you grant the relevant analytics scope. This can include views, watch time, retention, search terms and traffic sources, subject to reporting availability.

Can Claude change anything in my account?

It cannot post, edit or delete YouTube content through VidTraffic MCP. If you separately approve competitors:write or plan:write, Claude may change tracked competitors or planning items inside VidTraffic.

Does this connector summarise public YouTube videos?

Its published tools do not advertise a dedicated transcript-fetching function. For transcript-based video-content analysis, use a supported transcript workflow and follow our separate Claude video-analysis guide.

How do I disconnect Claude from VidTraffic?

Open VidTraffic → Agents, find Claude under Connected, and select Disconnect. You can also manage the connector from Claude’s settings.

Start Using Claude With Your Real Channel Numbers

Once Claude is connected, start small: verify a recent upload or an available metric, then ask a specific question about retention, search traffic or ideas. The value of a YouTube MCP connection is not another generic AI suggestion—it is the ability to investigate decisions using your channel’s authorized data.

Ready to connect? Open the VidTraffic YouTube MCP Server. No local installation or API key required.
